Claymation

How is repetition used to create an interesting set?

Teatime Adventure: Repetition is used with the warm colors of the set. The curtains and the sofa are both red which creates unity throughout the set. Also, the red colors contrast with the tea man's green outfit.

The HandPrint: The stones are repeated on the walkway in the beginning. Also the stick furniture and the paintings are repeated in the set.

The Raid:  The square windows and the building levels are repeated. The repetition helps create the feeling that the set is larger than it actually is.

How is lighting used? What is the effect?

Teatime Adventure: The lighting is bright and represents light coming in through the windows. The lighting effects the mood, which is cheerful.

The HandPrint: Lighting is used to show the effect of the candles and also to display the time (morning or night). Also, when the man is angry and breaking his art, the lighting is darker to represent the mood. When he is happier, the lighting is brighter.

The Raid: The lighting is dark in the beginning which adds to the suspense of the cats breaking in. The flashing of lights help create the sense of chaos.

How and why is depth of field used in each example?

Teatime Adventure: Depth of field is used to emphasize the characters. The background is out of focus, so it doesn't compete with the viewer's attention; instead, the viewer focuses on the characters.

The HandPrint: It is used in the very beginning when the rain falls on a window. Depth of field is used here so the viewer pays attention to the movement of the clay rain.

The Raid: It is used to focus on certain characters or objects.

What camera angles do you see being used in each example?

Teatime Adventure: Mostly medium shots are used with the occasional close up of a cup of tea.

The HandPrint: Close up shots are used of the feet when the man is walking and lighting the candles.  Over the shoulder shot is used when he is drinking and also slight bird's eye view when he is sitting. Also long and medium shots.

The Raid: There is a variety of camera angles. Pretty much all of them are used in this example. There is bird's eye view in beginning of the cats hiding around the corner of the building and when they are going up the different levels.  Long, medium, and close up shots are throughout the claymation too. The variety of camera angles add more interest and excitement to the claymation.
